My Life Verse

Two years ago, while Rob was in China on an RTS field trip, I began my journey in the world of Facebook.  Within 24 hours I had become friends with 150 people from my past, including a friend from fourth grade.  In a short period of time I was utterly struck with how many of my friends were no longer walking with the Lord.

I get it.  Life is hard, the road is crooked.  "Consider what the Lord has done: who can make straight, what God has made crooked?" (Ecc. 7:13)  Being 20-something is an invincible feeling.  You can accomplish anything and life is on your side.  You are still young enough to achieve more than your predecessors and the resolutions one makes in his/her twenties seem plausible.  You are on top of the world.  Youth, beauty, talent, freedom.

But life happens.  Any number of circumstances can happen--from marriage and kids to moral dilemmas, tragedies and bad luck.  It's like God sifts us out and if we haven't fallen through the holes of the sieve, we are in His hand.  Otherwise, we fall.  So many I know have fallen.  The only reason I haven't is because God has held me in His hand.

It is not always a comforting place to be, because, as Job said, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him." (Job `13:15)  He does slay us--not us, but the sin nature within us.  Praise be to God.  I want to always be grateful for His refining fire.  Soli Deo Gloria.

    Love this. Miss you guys sooo much. The photos are phenomenal. You are so blessed. The background photo of your blog is intriguing. What an amazing room.
    I look forward to your entries; you've always had an amazing mind and sensibility and I've always enjoyed your ease of expression concerning life and the Lord. No pressure, but expectations are high ;)

I finally got a full night's sleep!  The baby didn't wake, nobody needed nightmare comfort, and I actually felt like exercising!  (A first in over a year....)  I was elated and ready to tackle the day.  I was even excited to be outside for the first time in a year and announced to the brood that we would be going outside after mommy finished putting the breakfast dishes in the dishwasher and wiped off the sinks. Then - "CRASH!" I couldn't stop it.....the container of dipping oil Rob had concocted the night before for our dinner with friends tonight went hurling onto the ceramic tile in an explosion of glass and oil and herbs....."Nooooooo!" Liturgies, Heritage and Meditation

"When there are thoughts, it is distraction;  when there are no thoughts, it is meditation."  Ramana Maharshi The beach is my meditation.  I sit.  I listen.  I watch.  I feel the sun.  I feel the wind.  I feel the sand. I hear the waves. I hear the laughter. I watch the horizon. I watch the children. I can't seem to think one thought.  I try. Any thought would be distraction. And no thought even comes to distract. If I read, it is frivolity. No thinking required. Pure superficiality. The beach is my meditation.   When I lived on the California coast, I jogged at the beach, I walked on beach; kept my chair and towel in my car to sit and read for a hour or two to unwind from my day.  Drove to the beach in the predawn light to meditate on God's word and fellowship with Him. All I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Acting Class

"There's nowhere else to be but here.  There's nothing else to do but this." These were the first words out of our amazing acting coach, David Ralphe, at the beginning of every class.   You would feel your shoulders relax and your mind’s eye come into focus at the front of the class.   There he would be, probing each of us with his intuitive eye, patiently and compassionately waiting until we were all “there” in the room with him before he commenced.
